Keyboard Quickie

On my keyboard, the top left key has an unbroken vertical line on it. When printed (using Alt Gr as well) it gives a broken line. The broken line on the bottom left key (using Shift as well) gives an unbroken vertical line. Why are these the wrong way round? Thanks.
