readdir entry does not give file full name

I'm writing code to read a directory for files that have been modified within a given period of time. Unfortunately the readdir function only returns the first character of the filename for each file in the directory. Unless there is a function that can use the inode, I need the full filename to pass to the stat function so I can get the last modified info. PLEASE HELP POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION! THANKS....
