why do some AVIs not run on any player....including Windows Media Player.....in WMP..it gives the message..attempting to contact codec server...trying to find codec.....and then it simply plays the audio part of the AVI...and then there are some AVI files that run fine..

You probably are trying to run DivX (or other, but less probable) encoded movies. You will have to download and install such a codec, don't worry, they are free. If you haven't downloaded this yet, you can indeed listen to the audio track but not to see the video.

Search for Divx_311alpha, DivX412Bundle and DivX501Bundle on Google. Install them all, beginning with DivX3 and ending with DivX5.
