I have set out on a quest to make this the longest thread in codeguru. Talk about anything on your mind here, and all will see. Got anything at all to say? Let your voice be heard.
Remember, the sooner you respond the higher up your message will be, and the sooner you will be a part of history. You could be the John Hancock of codeguru.com.
Here, I'll get you all started:
Who is the evilest person in history (fictional or real)? Some suggestions: Scott Evil, Saddam Hussein, Catbert, Bud Selig, Bill Gates, Monty Burns.

So come on... who's really evil??? Some more suggestions: Sun Tzu (wrote The Art of War), Wile E. Coyote.

I don't think he let it happen directly. In governments all over the world the rule is the bigger the government institution, the bigger the bureaucracy, such as paperwork, formalities and the difficulties to communicate to other people on the same level in different departments.
He did let it happen indirectly by supporting the Taliban because they gave the necessary stability for the proposed Unocal pipeline. And his family has proven contacts with the bin Laden family.

It's not a state, it's a province. I'm in Canada. NS stands for Nova Scotia.

I would prefer that you picked a different topic to create your "long" thread with. Evil people is a subjective topic and like religeon and politics ends up causing more trouble than good. This is especially true as names of real "regular" people start getting mentioned. I'd rather you talk about chicken chops (Xeon?) or something else. Topics like favorite foods, most unique foods, that great movie you just saw..., common things to do for fun in your country/area, Unreal Tournament 2003 or some other game, etc...... These are safer topics that don't result (generally) in my getting lots of e-mails with complaints. :)
By the way, at some point, the threads in this category (General Discussion) will be taken off the top list on the front page of codeguru (www.codeguru.com), so that the more technical threads will appear instead.

Sorry you get complaints Brad, I removed my post. Why don't people mail to the person in question and ask them to withdraw it. But when people start with asking for evil people and mention Saddam Hussein from start on, people indeed ask for it. As far as UT 2003 is concerned, I've heard it's not that good. And moving too fast, like Quake. Graphically it would be OK of course.

Let's face.........it. If you want any thread of any kind to stay around longer and get more posts and views etc., u can't do without Xeon. And Elrond. And oh yes : the invincible Simon666, the ultimate post-provoking engine of all time.
Combine these 3 together with additonal power-packs like JeffB, Gabriel Fleseriu and such, and you'll get a much sought-after post.
And oh yes. Yves M too, that great tempter who gives lots of precious views etc.
But then, I know that even with power-guys like those mentioned above, this thread ain't gonna be better than the Where are we from thread, simply cos' of 1 reason : the initial topic of this thread is meaningless!
It has no form, no aim, no destination, no goals. Oh yes. The only goal for this thread is to make it long. Now, forgive me, but that's too artificial! In such cases, people wouldn't know what to talk about. They feel weird, cos' it's not natural in the first place at all.
Anyway, if Brad Jones can allow us to discuss extremely hot topics like sex actions in details and such, the number of views and posts in this thread will be much much much higher. Hmmm......but given Brad............hmmm......I don't think he'll.
But just to give you guys something to talk about : suppose you've a personal program which is already 60% done. Now, u discovered that there's lots of bugs suddendly and u feel like puking. And for the time being, u're too tired to fix them. Arrgggghhhh........in such a case, what do you do?
1) Do u shut down the PC, forget the problems, lie in bed, and after that, switch on the PC again and delete that program and all the related source files entirely and forget about it?
No bugs, no worries, no nothing. Life goes on as usual......ahhh......that sweet afternoon.
Probably, better still, give up programming altogether and look for something new to indulge yourself in.
2) Lie in bed and dream of your fantasies and pleasures.
Go and fix those cursed bugs later on.
3) Cry in your bedroom cos' it's such a pity. The program is almost completed and now this had to happen......
4) Go fix the bugs, but it's very hard and tough and it's almost impossible, and worse still, bugs after bugs appear after that particular part is done......
5) Go be a male sex slave
Now, if you were me, which of the following would you choose?
Now, that's something to tak about. :):):)

There's really only one best answer, and here it is. Write a program which writes your programs for you. It would be voice activated- all you do is say "make a program to do whatever," come back in an hour, and there, it's done. Now, of course this wouldn't work, but you could market it for millions of dollars (or whatever currency you prefer) and go into retirement, thereby making your original program entirely useless.
But going back to the original question, if the program had a ton of bugs that would be difficult to fix, then it wouldn't really be 60% done, would it?
Xeon- same question.

Although the French suck recently (we won from them in a qualification match before the world cup!!!), Germany actually too but they got lucky in the World Cup to get so far (as did many other countries). It's slightly historic (not as historic as, say, Yankee Stadium) but also up close and personal. Do you think you aren't working as hard if you're helping the team instead of yourself? Sports like baseball, soccer, football, etc. still require a maximal physical exertion. The effort is still there. Team sports are generally more complex and there is more action, more strategy, etc. That's why they're better to watch. In terms of which type is better to play, it depends on your own personal interests.
By the way, even in team sports, athletes get paid for what they accomplish. What they do in one year determines how much they will be paid the following year. It's not like they're getting paid a ton of money because they sit around and do nothing. Some sports have a higher average salary because they attract more fans and merchandising (=more money), and these are the team sports for reasons stated above.
It's fine that you prefer individual sports, but your reasoning is hardly solid.

If I were a redskins fan I would have lost interest too ;). Go Cowboys!
For many, many years, ending about 5 years ago, every Philadelphia sports team sucked! But now, due of course to my persistent presence in the city, all the teams have improved. The 76ers (basketball) lost only to the heavily favored Lakers in the NBA finals, to a team whose star player, Kobe Bryant, grew up in Philadelphia; the Eagles (football) have been a Superbowl favorite, the Phillies (baseball) almost had a .500 season, but not quite, maybe next year; and the Flyers (hockey) have been to the Stanley cup. Talk about improvement! It's always fun to root for the home team.

I don't know how long standard rulers are in normal countries, but I'm guessing about 30cm or so. My country started a war over 200 years ago to become independent from England and the only thing it kept was the English measuring system... anyways, now compare the length of that ruler to the length that this string would occupy if you lined up every word of every post. Which is longer? Well, unless you use EXTRAORDINARILY small fonts on your computer, this string is clearly longer. If it's not, I congratulate you on your eyesite. At any rate, compare this string now to the circumfrence of the earth, or the distance across the milky way. Not so big now, huh? Thought so. So... in conclusion, "long" is all in your mind.
But as strings go, this is pretty long! Consider the fact that there have been 212885 strings in existence since CodeGuru started. Now remember that this string is the 7th longest and growing fast. That means it is in the top .0033% of all time. Quite an elite membership. Is it long now? It still depends on your point of view. For me, I would say that it is a fairly lengthy and equally meaningless thread.

As long as we are on the topic of sports, does anyone realize the parallel in the baseball playoffs to 1997? In 1997, the heavily favored Yankees lost to the Cleveland Indians in the division series, who went on to win the pennant and lose the world series to a wildcard team. This year, the Anaheim Angels beat the heavily favored Yankees again in the division series, have won the pennant, and are going to lose the world series (hopefully) to the San Francisco Giants, the national league wildcard. Pretty sneaky there...
And isn't it odd that, if the Giants win the pennant, the world series will be two wildcard teams? Has that ever happened? No. This will be a first, unless by some miracle the Cardinals can come back from a 3 games to 1 deficit. It will be the North vs the South in California! And if history has tought us anything, specifically the American Civil War from 1861-1865 for you non-Americans, the north will win.

It's no big secret why, actually. Because dogs from these breeds were too often held by people who either had no idea of what a dog is, or, worse, wanted to use the dog as a weapon.
And then it came to that tragical accident (incident?) in Germany (about 2 years ago, or so), that being enough to make the public oppinion over-sensitive on this subject. A lot of thigs have been said and done since, many of them plain stupid.
Especially the german authorities had a stupid reaction: they simply out-lawd the import and breeding of certain dogs and begun to perform a series of stupid "behaviour" tests with the dogs already present in Germany.

Yup. Wanna drive a car? Get a (drivers) license that proves that you are able to. Wanna have a dog, especially a large one? Get a license that proves that you are able to.
That would be the ideal solution. It's not exactly feasable, that way, though...

The reputation that Rottweilers have of being bad drivers is un-earned. For example, I've never seen a Rottweiler talking on a cell phone while driving and I've never seen a Rottweiler driving more than 5 over in a school zone.
I rented a car recently and they gave me an SUV. I made some startling discoveries.
1) The turn signals on SUV's actually work!
2) You can start the engine of an SUV without having a cell phone to your ear!
3) An SUV can actually be driven at the speed limit!
I think this information needs to get out to the general public.

Absoulutley not! I love the goverment socking it to them. It's forcing them to release their source code. Making them stop trying to hammer companies that compete with them. My company (I work for a startup) probably will either
1. Get bought out by microsoft

Definitely! The problem with the government (and almost all governments) is that they're all talk and not actually doing anything. If they did something, problem solved, move on with life. But the problem is this: they are too concerned that if they do something, they will lose popularity. i.e.: if they vote to do something to microsoft (which I think they did, but havent implemented it yet, but thats beside the point), then all the people who didn't want it to happen (such as software companies, etc.) won't like it, and won't re-elect that person to the gov't. And that's all that matters to the gov't. Pretty messed up.

What haven't they implemented? The states I believe are going to file their own class action suits. But as far as I know the DOJ case is over with. And the DOJ doesn't care about politicians but one thing that was obsured was the notion of breaking them up into smaller companies ala baby bells.
By a Stipulation filed with the Court on November 6, 2001, Microsoft agreed to comply with the terms of the Proposed Final Judgment pending its entry by the Court. Section III.E. of the Proposed Final Judgment requires Microsoft to make available for use by third parties on reasonable and non-discriminatory terms certain technology used by server operating system products to interoperate with a Windows operating system product. Under the terms of Section III.E., Microsoft must offer this technology for license no later than August 6, 2002. Microsoft has informed the Department that it will begin to offer these licenses and start the process of negotiating the terms with prospective licensees on August 6, and that information concerning the licenses will be available on Microsoft's website on that day.

Sorry, I have to go back a ways in this thread...
Why is it that so many women assume an interest in football indicates low intelligence, even though they don't understand how the game works themselves? I realize there are a lot of beer-totin' slobs that love football, but that's only because there are a lot of beer-totin' slobs out there and football is the most popular U.S. sport. It's not the beer-totin' slobs that play the game. Football's an exciting, team-oriented, strategic sport and it takes a decent amount of intelligence to play it.

You speak as though European football (American soccer) and American football are the same thing. Anyone who thinks that the two sports have anything in common aside from 11 player teams is very mistaken. Interesting topics are a matter of opinion. I consider sports interesting if there is a situation, i.e. if we were to say the football team has the ball on their own 30 yard line on 3rd and 4, what play do they run, etc. Football, and other sports, are humans doing human things, that's what makes them interesting. There's no single correct or best thing to do in a football game.
If you want something more intelligible, how about talking about Schroedinger or someone like that, that seems to be what you like, intelligent scientists. Just say something and others will follow.

Yes, humans have been interested in sports for quite some time. Particularly ball sports. There are some artistic displays of ball games in some Middle Eastern sites dating back 5 to 6 thousand years, and in the new world there are the well known mesoamerican depictions. There are no depictions I know that show women playing, but that is definitely something I would love to be contradicted on. Women more likely were gathering, as it is well known that until the Industrial Revolution, women spent a greater percentage of their time working on obtaining food and maintaining the dwelling than men, and provided according to most estimates, between 80 to 90 percent of the nutrition of humanity. Hunting, it is quite humorous to me, never really did help much, since there are many studies which show that usually the effort of hunting consumed more calories than were brought home. Which is why, it seems to me, women were never really into ball sports until very recently in our history. I'm glad you responded to my original post asking why men found football interesting. It definitely is something we can talk about more.
Oh, but please do not assume my ignorance and I will not assume yours. I was the one who made the clever little distinction between football and american football. Well, it seems to me that you are the kind of person that usually assumes they understand any topic, but I have a feeling in this case, football, you do not. Your original post seemed to already assume our ignorance.
Hunting, it is quite humorous to me, never really did help much, since there are many studies which show that usually the effort of hunting consumed more calories than were brought home.
Ah, so it's a "women are just more intelligent" kind of thing. Perhaps hunting was more useful in maintaining the fighting skill of the men at an adequate level to defend the women from wild animals or other men. Or are you saying that men served no purpose other than reproduction?
As for Gunter, that's a very interesting topic, but to many people, so is football. Maybe to you the origin of life is all we need concern our minds with, but others lead a more balanced lifestyle. It's a matter of personal choice. To claim a discussion of football is at some lower level of intelligence shows some extreme arrogance. Software engineers taking a short break from work to discuss football, in my lesser lifeform opinion, is quite healthy.

The Texan visiting Vermont asked a farmer how large an acreage he cultivated. The Vermonter said meditatively, "Oh, it's quite large. My farm extends for about a hundred yards in that direction and for nearly a hundred-twenty yards in that. And how large an acreage do you handle?" The Texan could not help but smile. "Back home," he said, "I have a ranch with my house at one end. I can get into my car at the house, turn on the ignition key, step on the gas, and atthe end of the day, still not have reached the ther end." The Vermont farmer nodded sympathetically. "Tough! I once had a car like that, too."

Listen, Pug. I really did not intend to turn the feel of this thread into something negative. It's been entertaining and I hope it continues to be. So for anyone who took my original post as an attack:
I appologize.
I am just one of those types that enjoys teasing and prodding those I am communicating with, but I never intend harm. I'm just playful.
And well, I am the type who assumes I CAN know anything if I put the time into it. This has served me well throughout my life. I basically figure that learning any field involves knowing two things: the objects the field talks about, and the transformations those objects have been described to undergo. This is the basis of the modified noun/modified verb semantics that all human languages support. I don't think its a bad thing to assume that I can know something.
But, lets get back to the fun. Does anyone here enjoy the satirist Robert Anton Wilson? In my life, I have enjoyed satire by Douglas Adams, Oscar Wilde, Kurt Vonnegut, and RAW. But I really hold the greates admiration for RAW. All of his works are CrAaZy!!

Perhaps his most famous work is The Illuminatus Trilogy (in collaboration with Robert Shea). Another popular work of his is Cosmic Trigger, but he has written some other very fine works like The Schroedinger's Cat Trilogy and Willhelm Reich in He**. He writes both fiction and essays. His fiction is really psychedelic/libertarian oriented and he borrows the cut-up technique of Brion Gyson/William Burroughs alot. He's a futurist in many respects, but in a creative way.

The best book I've read lately would have to be Black Lotus by Laura Joh Rowland. I had never heard of her before, but this is truly an outstanding book. It's part of a series, and not the first, but the book stands on its own. It's a murder mystery in 17th century Japan involving a corrupt branch of Buddhism. The "Black Lotus Temple" is really a cult trying to conquer Edo (ancient Tokyo), while the Shogun's Detective is trying to determine the cause of some strange happenings recently in town. I won't ruin the action for you! Definitely a book worth checking out, if you have time to read.

Who is the evilest person in history (fictional or real)? Simon :(
Simon666
October 23rd, 2002, 02:50 AM
It is queen Beatrix from Holland. I say she shot Pim Fortuyn, got rid of her aging husband, made the government fall and will soon take off with billions of dollars (remember the budget deficit risk coming out of the blue) leaving Netherland as broke as Argentine and easy prey for an expansionist Belgium. :D :p
As you can see, I am the most evil person around.

I'd hardly call our weak pathetic queen evil muhahaha. She can't do anything anyways... Everything is decided by the government, she just exists out of historical and social (yuck yuck) reasons.
You are evil tho' :-) Go stand in the cornor. Shame on you for dissing such an old lady hehe

It is queen Beatrix from Holland. Is she still alive I mean is she still alive ? Who is Pim Fortuyn so that shooting him/her makes one wicked ? Many women are in the habit of getting rid of their husbands that would render half the women folk evil.
How many take off with billions of dollars belonging to companies, countries, individuals

You're not from europe are you? :-) Yea Beatrix is still alive. Her husband Klaus died recently. Pim Fortuyn was a new radical strongly opinioned politician (especially where emmigrants/refugees are concerned) who could have had a lot votes. His party (which was new) still got a lot of votes even though somebody decided to shoot him.

By the way, I need to mention something, as we are discussing evil people (again) for a moment. It appears in the USA people (read : lousy conservatives) grab any chance they can to be able to forbid certain games such as UT. AFAIC you're absolutely right Simon. They also forbid you to commit suicide, drink nitro glycerine, piss fire, whatever. If I wanna die painfully that's my problem, I should be allowed to do that if I want that (not that i'm that sick haha, it's just the idea that I should be allowed, i don't want to). Heck, if I wanna go to the gas station and drink a couple of gallons they'll probably stop me in an institution.
Wonder how people invented things in the past.... They just had to drink it, inject it or whatever to find out what it did, didn't they?
It may be sick, very sick even, but if people want to and they don't harm others, what the heck?! Let em...

Garbage, Simon!
U really should go fuse together with Java, cos' it has Garbage Collection built into the programming language/platform. That way, you don't need to worry about talking garbage. :):D:D
And no......Platinum IS NOT from Malaysia or the Phillipines. He CANNOT be from ANY ASIAN country.
East Asians(Korea, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong) don't talk in this manner. They're not as cute.
Central Asia(Mongolia and Tibet etc.) is just too darn impossible.
South East Asia(Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Thailand, Indonesia, Phillipines etc.) is just too impossible too.
Some Asians can be funny, but not in this kinda unique manner like Platinum. The way he expresses his speech is clearly more geared towards the Americas.(Canada, the USA, and the entire S. America continent)
For example, Americans call a spanner a "monkey wrench", and they use very expressive and creative terms to call things and such.(even Europeans have difficulty understanding their speech sometimes)
Platinum should be from Canada, the US, either one of those countries in South America(Brazil, Argentina etc.)
If not, he must be an American living in South Africa. I KNOW there's lots of Westerners working and living there.
Period. :):D

Look, if he would be from South or North America he could only be from Brazil. His English has contained mistakes before if I remember correctly, his French is terrible which excludes Canada and his Spanish has been corrected by a native Spanish so that excludes the rest of the America's, apart from Brazil where they speak Portugese.
About that Asian thingy you are in a better position to know than I am. And I think his claims of knowing Chinese are false, just as the Swahili thingy. I'm beginning to even doubt he knows English. :D

Platinum Plus......hmmm.......could it be that this guy is from nowwhere?
In para-normal facts(extraordinary happenings), there was this boy who actually appeared outta nowhere sometime in the past, in the UK, I think.(around the 17th - 18th century)
He couldn't really speak any language, and he doesn't even seem to know what he is and such. And when he was first seen by folks, they mentioned that he was dirty and dragged, and utter no English word. And all he ever wanna eat is bread and water.
When the folks managed to teach him English, he said that he was locked in some really small and dark place whereby he's given only bread and water daily.
A few years later, this mysterious guy was killed(stabbed) by some mysterious man and died. Thus, no one really knows.
Platinum Plus.......could he have been communicating with us from somewhere in the future???!!
Einstein states that time is not linear, and the past, present and future could collide with each other at some point in time.
If that's the case, Platinum must be from some new country which will only be discovered in the future : a country unheard of.
We dunno his origin, and could not decipher his race, religion, national language, hobbies, height and such.
Platinum.......at least, tell us the first alphabet of your country??!! :):D

Now, we cannot rule out the fact that Platinum IS a Spanish.
He says he's not, but he may be lying.
And as for the fact that he wrote his Spanish wrongly and got corrected by Irona, he might be faking that too.
If not, it's just a coincidence. Even native speakers of a particular language will make mistakes in writing/saying in that language.
For example, Mick_2002. I remember in one of his posts, he use "don't" in the wrong place, and it's darn obvious. There's plenty of examples of such cases around here.
More crucially, notice that Irona has a special bond with Platinum.
I know Irona has a boyfriend, but look :
From research on their previous posts, it is obvious Irona is in some way connected to Platinum.
People from the same country tend to have a special bond with one another.
For example, a guy from China will be able to get along better with another guy from China, cos' they're more similar in their customs and such than people from other countries.
And since Irona is from Spain, it could be that Platinum is somewhat living in Spain too. Or probably, he could be from one of those countries in the Meditterenean.(wrong spelling, but you get the meaning)
Could Platinum be from the Maldives?
I've already wrote to George War Bush on this issue. And the deal between us is that if I send him a plate of chicken chop each day, he'll sponsor my team in search of the answer : Just where Platinum Plus is from.
I'll be contacting NASA in the afternoon to get tools such as statelittes to help in the researching and tracking.
Tomorrow, I might not be able to post here, cos' I'll be having a chicken chop cuisine with the US Chief of Defence at the White House. I hope I'll be able to get at least 50 fighter-planes from him instead of the current 12, and I hope he can lend me the USS Lincoln. Currently, I only have the USS Roosevelt and that's not enough.

That ain't necessarily so... When I was still a chat addy I rather talked to foreigners since they are more interesting. You can learn a lot from foreigners because of the different habbits they have and ways of doing things. Also the cultural differences are nice and you come to notice you shouldn't talk to some people in the same way you talk to them here. We dutchies are pretty direct usually and when anyone ****s up we usually aren't subtile about it. I only said his French was terrible: he spelled bonjour in two words. I did not say French is the only language in Canada, but it is a commonspread one in some parts as Quebec. I know most part of Canada speaks English. So I can conclude that this pretty much excludes Canada unless he's someone from the English speaking part who really didn't pay attention during French lessons, but that I consider very unlikely too.

But there ain't much to say I guess. The french ***** on the dutch because the french get the drugs here. The dutch hate french yeah... For the simple reason that the french don't like to speak any other language. They think french is it, the most wonderful language on the earth and then they come here and they expect EVERYONE to speak french because their language is the most beautiful on earth (or so they think, cuz i don't like it). They come here asking directions to the coffeeshop (the store where you can buy soft-drugs) in french?! Then you tell them you can tell them in english no no it must be french. You tell them again you don't speak french but you can speak english, no no it must be french. Then you tell them to **** off and find the shop on their own and then english will do... If all else prevails, english will do. **** em, they came here....
PS, I'm not generalising, that's just how it usually goes. Not all french people are like that and education also has something to do with it. Newer generations want to learn english, but the old ones can't teach it, nor do they want to learn how to teach it. So all the english they get is writing and reading. If you hear them speak english you'll laugh (not that my pronouncement is all that great) because they NEVER heared english in their entire lives. All movies are synchronised (yuck yuck bloody yuck (subtitles here)) and in school they don't get it. And the worsed part it... a lot of french/english words are the same, when used as verbs n stuff they change. However, the speech is so different you won't recognize it unless written down :/
I like France btw, it's a beautiful country. Just don't like a lot of the inhabitants (cause of lingual reasons, I'm sure they're great as persons, there's just this we don't wanna communicate thing between dutch n french ppl, wonder who will give in first). Ah heck, you can see it in Quebec how the french are. Every year they'll vote if they'll become totally french and every year they loose by an inch. Why doesn't the whole world just speak english? :-( It's easy, it's easy and most of all, it's really friggin' easy...

Here's a really funny site which does that (but in English): Random sentences (http://www.intersrv.com/~dcross/sentence.html)

Pick me! Pick me!
I play guitar and keyboard. I use to sing for a post-punk/industrial band... My favorite scale used to be the enigmatic scale, but now I think I am falling in love with the pentatonics because I can only get songs from it that sound like its directly out the orient.
What are your favorite composition programs? Mine is Logic Platinum. Its great for remixing and composing!

I've never used any such program, but one day I will write a program where you can play an instrument into the microphone and it will write the music you played, complete with rhythm, pitch, meter, scale, etc. I'll probably be 200 years old when I'm done :).
As for me personally, I play the marimba (it's like a xylophone but sounds really nice) and the piano (I love this the most). In the past I have played the violin and guitar, but I really hated the violin :(.

You have a very big project ahead of you (as I see you know well by your estimate)! Respect. I can't wait till you'r done as I need exactly that for some of my most recent projects. Logic has a cheap little attempt at computing notes from an audio file, but it rarely works right no matter how much I fidget with it. It even sometimes will put three notes when only one is played. I hear MOTU has a product out that does some of these things, but I haven't gotten around to checking it out (I hear thats where they got their name -- Mark Of The Unicorn, referring to the audio spikes when a note envelope sounds), and I am fairly confident it cannot do all of what you want in your program. I could really use something that would try to figure out tempo and time signature through a more intelligent look at the audio, for remixing and dj'ing.
So you play piano too? What type do you work on (upright, baby grand, grand, player:)). What brand? I wish I had a yamaha acoustic, but I only have a clavinova and an old upright I got from a university sale(which is actually waiting in my old town -- I haven't moved it to my new place yet).
And what is your favorite scale? Lately, I've been messing around with E minor pentatonic and finding all sorts of wacky oriental and middle eastern harmonies...

It's not something I'm currently working on. I don't know when (or if) I'll get around to it.

A yamaha upright ;).
And what is your favorite scale?
I would have to say C major is good enough for me :). But seriously, whatever scale gets the job done. I've played a lot of music by Gershwin, and if you know his style, it would be a stretch to say it's even in a scale.

ALERT!!!! ALERT!!!! ALERT!!!! ALERT!!!!
For everyone living on mars and related solar satellites: TORI AMOS' NEW ALBUM IS OUT NOW!!!! Its a beautiful representation of the goddess incarnate (in carne?).
Back to the sobering reality of this thread...
About scales: for some reason I am constantly getting into these obsessions with certain scales. Some of the songs I have written include some BASIC scale changes, and I've even tried twelve-tone (but I get lost in the freedom... maybe sometimes I just need to be tied down  ?). Anyway, I do like to mess around with some jazz scales (is that an oxymoron?) sometimes, but I usually find that I will mess around with a 5-7 note scale for a while because each one gives me a new emotional canvas to mess around with.
Off topic:TORI AMOS HAS A NEW ALBUM OUT TODAY!!! IF YOU DO NOT BUY IT, THE GODDESS WILL PUNISH YOU MIGHTILY!!!!

I've never tried to compose anything serious... I'd rather play music that has stood the test of time, proving it to be worth playing, rather than something that was created out of my own sick mind.
I find that playing music can be highly relaxing. Part of that is its predictability. If you know what's coming next, and you hear it, it's very satisfying and relaxing. When you play a song, you know exactly what you expect to hear, and you hear it, but you're also not just sitting down listening. It's more active: you're physically making the music, so it's like you're very much a part of the relaxing aura around you.

I'm kinda curious to know it's origin. Was it something related to St. Augustine and the witches and the chicken chop set meals in the witches house or something?
I believe Halloween used to be called "Hallow Eve". Since Hallow means divine/holy, it gotta have something to do with saints and such, but I wonder how and why the theme of Halloween has changed to ghosts, ghouls, Beasts(666), Satan/Devil, spirits and souls, vampires and imps instead.

I don't know entirely, but here's what I do know:
There used to be some holiday (from Ireland or something) on November 2nd, but the church outlawed it and made "All Hallow's Day" on November 1st to prevent people from celbrating that other holiday (don't ask me how it worked), and then All Hallow's Eve(ning) is the night before, when people scared evil spirits away to prepare for All Hallow's Day.
I could be entirely wrong, but this is what I've heard.

To develop this discussion furthur, maybe interested peeps can post the evolution of their musical preferences. That's something I'm always interested in, and I'm sure we all have had our embarrassing phases that we would NEVER tell anyone about (except in the anonymity of the CodeGuru forum). Particularly include that music which you study/code in. For example:
I really started choosing my musical preferences late. I started out into bands like Queen and Rush from the seventies. This was mainly because my ma was into these, and I was really naive about what was out there. But through my friends I began getting into Metallica, Megadeath, and the whole metal scene, but that never suited me. I was much angrier than I had realized, and bands like Gwar, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, and classic Death Metal like Celtic Frost (before their big-hair days) seemed interesting. However, then I found myself basically splitting up in two musically, with a punk side like Suicidal Tendencies, X-Ray Specs, the Damned, Sham69, GBH, and even such classics as the Sex Pistols emerging on one hand as my more favorites and on the other hand more industrial bands like Ministry satisfying my more experimental/apocalyptic cravings. Even as I grew bored with punk, I realized that it was this industrial streak which more satisfied my self-view, so I really got into bands like Throbbing Gristle, Einsturzende Neubauten and Cabaret Voltaire. For several years, Throbbing Gristle was my favorite band of all, though I experimented in japanese noise bands like Merzbow and the Boredoms. Eventually my teenage angst played itself through, and I began to find myself enjoying more mellow music from the Cleopatra catalog like Death In June and Psychic TV (a TG spinoff), and I also began listening to Dead Can Dance and related. This was probably when I started liking Tori Amos as well. Eventually, I found electronica and enjoyed the musicianship of some of the subfields. I now particularly enjoy much of the downtempo/drum-n-bass type musics, such as IDM like Muziq, DJ Spooky, Boards of Canada, etc. I have always coded and studied with music playing, and I have enjoyed doing so to all of the musics mentioned.
Anyway, there is my life-music history. Some of it I am still proud to listen to, others I have become somewhat embarrased of. I would love to hear about others' histories. I think the music you have listened to says alot about your past and present personality.

Since I'm a cheap guy ;), instead of letting my music taste develop itself, I let my listening preferences tune to radio stations. (That means no $$$ lost on CDs or other forms of music). Various stations at various times, of course. But that's only music I like to listen to. Music to play is a lot different; on the piano, I enjoy classics and a little bit of modern stuff, and when I used to play in a (school) band I enjoyed anything that had a lot of brass.

Of course not, Simon! Don't be silly! I never force him to hire me as a lawyer, and besides, if he can't pay any of them, he can always pay me in installements, right??!
For example, orginally, I need 5 gurls age 20. That would be a total age of 100 years old.
If he can't send me 5 gurls who're each 20 years old, he can send me a **** per day who's younger, like 6 years old and such.
And who says anything about doing something bad to those gurls??!!! Daddy Xeon's gonna take 'em to amusement parks, buy toys and candies for 'em and pamper them and take care of them and such. Besides, I love baby gurls. That's why.

Peewee Herman.....I know him. He was my rival in last year's Most Lovable Internet Paedophile Award 2001. We were on par, but this year, we're gonna compete again.(the cops are gonna let him outta jail to compete with Xeon)
But like it or not, George War Bush just said on the media today that I'm a darn good example for all Internet Paedophiles to follow, cos' I've the following remarkable qualities :
1) Compassion : I don't do those prey who have a sad story or background
2) Intelligence : I flirt around with female cops who come to catch/spy on me, and I gave those male cops lots of presents and gifts for their kids and wives
3) Understanding : If my victims/prey gave me chicken chop, I would very gladly let 'em off, provided that they call the cops after they got home. That way, it makes the whole game more exciting.
4) Kindness : Before preying on my victims who're usually teenage gurls, I would find out about their family problems and such. If they've any, I would go all out to help 'em before doing anything to them.
5) Humbleness : Despite receiving 60 awards, 223 medals, 92 trophies and 2641 certificates over the last 3 years, I never boasted about anything, which is cool.
Disclaimer to the Moderators : The above mentioned are all fictionous, regardless of how true they're. The fact, which proves that Xeon is totally harmless and cute, should be taken into account.

No no......in order to charge any members for $$$, you have to do something noble, which isn't easy.
Look at me, for example : 1 year ago, there was a battle.....a terrible one......that happened in Codeguru. All of us were fighting like there's never a better chance. Gabriel lost his pets, Emi lost his hair, Elrond lost his books and was wounded, and Jase Jennings had to sell his house in order to fund us for the war.
That terrible war was started cos' some traitor(not me!) wanted to become a site manager, and overthrow Brad Jones!
In the real world, we swear by God.
In Codeguru, we swear by Codeguru Itself, and then Brad the Untouchable.
I actually lost 75%(around 2000) of my gurls to those darn rebels, and they almost kill me but luckily, my troops arrive.
That was a total bloody battle that was never forgotten.....aye, my son.
So, because of my darn glorious history, I can became da' man here and charge junior members and bully 'em hard and watch 'em cry.
So, if you don't wanna pay me fees, u're gonna become a statistic.
There you go... this month's fees... 2480 dollars (American - not those cheap Canadian ones).

Valid points, but remember, now that Brad has taken the general discussion threads off the front page, this thread is worthless anyway. At the moment, it is the second longest in the history of codeguru and that's fine. Thanks to people like Galathaea who posts three things instead of one because it's all about the numbers, right?

In fact, it was those three posts that pushed me over 400 posts. This post will get me 407. I love big, impressive numbers!

Yeah, cuz you know god loves big, round numbers. And 400, well, its just so BIG and ROUND. Anywho, you're posting so much useless stuff that I will no longer be able to keep up with you. You'd have only about 100 if they counted useful posts. And me, I'd owe posts.
Argh, what a slow week.

Why? Is he trying for Moderator Emperor? :)
I doubt he could catch up with Xeon post-wise, though...

And the punchline is.... Choose 1
A) I can't understand all this arguing about the oatmeal.
B) One side of a duck is always longer than the other.
C) And the duck says "Just put it on my bill"
D) And the pig says "I won it in a raffle".
Feel free to add your own jokes to these "Never Fail" punchlines.

Hmmm... reminds me of Road to Perdition. Great movie (for what it was). And at the end, when the pig says "I won it in a raffle".

I dunno anything about that bimbo movie, but really : it must be a sexy, adults-only involving cute young gurls who makes men freeze like anything!

Speaking of movies, there are gonna be some good ones that I'm gonna see this week. Most notably "Die another Day" and "Eight crazy nights". Adam Sandler is hilarious!
