A friend of mine wants me to help him write some software with the idea that to register it you make a donation to a charity of his choosing. Does this seem like something you (as a user) would do?

and pay registration fees (even though I don't need to since I know where to get Serialz and have some experience cracking). I also use freeware and professional distibutions as well. I didn't always pay for software (when I was younger and too poor to pay my rent let alone...) but now I see it as appropriate. If I knew my money was going somewhere more appropriate than Fritos and beer (not that I'm against either one), I'd definitely pay it out. Its a beautiful idea.

I like what mIRC (http://www.mirc.com) does in this regard. They collect the payments themselves, and then donate it all to the chairty. You have paid for the product, and you know it went to the right place (at least I believe the author). The nice thing about this type of registration is that they say something on the lines of "Registration is $20, but you can pay any amount .. even $5 or whatever".

I definitely would. This is a major alternative to paying big money for a product and knowing it goes to some abstract destination, buried beneath the marketing of a company. Charity is better.
