localhost

Hi,
In the browser when i enter localhost it gives error ,i have to enter full ip address to start home page or anything else.
When i use localhost it gives error:

HTTP 404 - File not found
Internet Explorer
///////////////////////////
Can anybody suggest on that

In the windows directory, there should be a file called hosts, just hosts no extension, if it isn't there, rename hosts.sam to hosts. Edit the file using notepad and at the bottom, add following line

127.0.0.1 localhost

where 127.0.0.1 is your IP address
normally, 127.0.0.1 is always a valid IP address for your pc, since it is used for loopback.

thanx for reply,
i have two files on that location one is hosts and other is imhosts.sam,in hosts last line is
127.0.01 localhost
In imhosts.sam only comments are there.
But still localhost is not working.
