I am new to SQL server.

Is MS-SQL and SQL server are same or different?

Can you please tell me what is latest version of SQL server? Is it SQL 2000?

Also please tell me what are the excellent books for this with details(like publisher,author edition etc..)?

As most people would know it SQL Server and MS-SQL are the same.

SQL Server 2000 is the latest version available.

What area are ou most insterested in? (Dev, Analysis, Admin)

There are lots of books on various apects of SQL, if you want a good overviw then look at the Exam Prep and Exam Cram related books for the SQL 2000 tests. Also the In A Nutshell books are great. Or check out on Amazon at the customer ratings for books related to SQL Server.
