MCI Control

I want add voice support to my application ie user should be able to record voice and play it back when he wishes to uptill now I am able to record and play back voice by using mci control but now i wish to check what the users has "talked" to the machine how to do this right now i am taking voice in wav format and storing them as disk files what is the right way to do the same which format should i take the user input in so that i can perform validation on it please help me and can someone sugest some alternate way of taking user input any api calls if there are any .
