How to play a sound with a graphic function

I'm a french student in technics of communication and I'm looking for a method to play a sound (in java) using a graphic function. It means I'd like to play, by example, the sound corresponding to the function cos(2pi*t+5). The purpose is for me (it's a project I have to make for my studies) to create a programm allowing to generate sound with a mathematic function.

All idees are welcomed...
