How does Yahoo Companion Work?

Although I'm not a big fan of Yahoo, while checking around I found a really cool program they have created. If you check our this url http://edit.yahoo.com/config/download_companion , you can see thier Yahoo Companion, which adds a Yahoo toolbar to both Internet Explorer and Netscape. How does this work? I have no idea how they did this, and how did they get it to work with both IE and Netscape. If you could tell me how this works, please do, I really would like to see if I could duplicate something of this respect.
