JNDI

I am a new Java programmer, with a C++ and VB background. Writing a Unix daemon that needs to connect to LDAP. I found the JNDI located at http://java.sun.com/products/jndi/ problem is that I can't get their samples to work that come with the JNDI download. I am building the env Hashtable object and then passing it to the InitialLdapContext(HashTable env, null), problem is, as soon as I make this call it hangs. Please help. I can provide the sample source code if needed.
