Yeah first of I must thank all you guys here in codeguru thanks to whom I am today able to join my new company :) ;)
I am sorry I cannot in any way host a party on this occasion, Any way there was bad news for me even before even I could settle down...there is no internet access in my new company  . I am missing the codeguru everyday now, not only for its friendly members but also the great knowledge pool available. You will be shocked to know my company name its ROBERT BOSCH :ehh:
Yes everything else bieng so good this single issue has become a pain in my *** frankly!
Imagine how damm unfortunate I could be to miss such a fundamental facility / right of a Software Professional.
I have heard of restricting chat/sex/other ... sites but this crosses the limit all together.
I really pity myself, I don’t know how I am going to manage my career as a Software Professional

A software company that doesn't give internet access to their developers
It's just stupid: imagine you're stuck with some problem that you and your coworkers can't solve. So you need to try to pass the day somehow, so you can search the internet at night at home and maybe even find the solution in 5 minutes... So, that company just wasted a full day...
I would find another job immediately.

First and foremost... Congratulation on your new found job... :)
It's sad that they don't give you any internet access... I can barely bring myself to believe that a software developer is not allowed to access the internet at all...
Good luck!

They are really missing something, maybe you could take that opportunity to tell them how "necessary" is the internet for programmers... but why no internet actually? Cost? They are affraid employees waste to much their time? You work in north pole? :D

hmmm.. Maybe they just dont want the SW developers sharing 'Company code' to other's .... Some people are realy that stuck up. :p
But then whats to stop a SW thief from using a 'USB flash disk' :D
After all that it still dont make sence..
Go to your Bosses office and DEMAND inet access..
But anyways congrats.. Realy hope it's worth no inet access..

Congratulation for the job :)
Well, I second JeffB, you can tell them that they can provide the restricted internet access, monitor/log the traffic, but by not providing the internet facility, they are not helping to increase the productivity at all, unless they are doing something that no one has ever done before on this planet, so that they expect no help from anywhere.
Misuse of office facilities (and that not only includes internet) is not uncommon in any office, no matter what you do, people fool around, but thats what Management is for. If I can't keep my developers head ahed, then its my failure and the worst that I can do is, ban the facilities and admit openly that I'm a looser.

Do you mean no internect connection at all, or that employees are not allowed to use surf the net? Do you guys use emails for example? A software company that doesn't have an internet connection is like a hospital without needles or something like that. ;)

Congratulation and good luck in your new job.
about the internet access issue, sound pretty lame to me, however its hard for me to beleive that there is no connection at all, i am pretty sure the big boss surf and use email.
i know some companies that work for the military market that prevent access to internet, however even those companies have computers that are not connected to the inner network that one can use for surfing.
so maybe you are working in a top secret institution
Cheers

First congrats on your new job:thumb:
You are working for Bosch?? a cellfone company?? if so, then it is not uncommon, a couple of my friends were assigned on-site to work for cellfone related project and they were not given any outside connection, the software installed in there pc's were monitored, and personal emails and calls( unless emergency ) are not allowed. :(
But gooluck on your new job, don't let the internet connection dampen your working spirit :D

Thank you all guys once again for the sympathy towards my pathetic condition
It is this kindness in CG that really hurts me, but I am not going let things down this way! I will now be available through my home...It so unfortunate that not even a single friend of mine told me about this.
Yes as you guys guessed it higher management do have the net connection, pretty strange considering all the work is done by the junior and middle level professionals
And if really required you need to ask your boss for the access
I don't know whether I should consider my self lucky or unlucky
Let's see I will speak about this with my GM tommorow, I not vey hopeful about this though  since this seems to be company wide :(

Well, you can refer this thread to him and we can make an attempt for providing the necessary development facilities to the employees ;)

Congrats on your new job.
I once expereenced the same thing when I first started working after graduation in my first company. They provided no internet connection and not even email.. that was so lame, the reason mostly because it involves military related projects, so we can't access internet, the pc we use don't have a floppy, no cd writer.. to use the usb, you have to be very sneaky. don't let them see..:o
It was so hard to make my Manager understand how hard it is to develop without an internet connection, he thinks that we should be able to do everything just using our head and books(of course they provide lots of books, but for fresh graduate like me at the time.. hmm it was still very hard)..
after some discussion with the Manager, then only he agreed to provide extra pc with internet connection. which is not connected to the developement pc directly. it was still quite hard since you can't download source sample to your developement pc, need to retype everything..
Maybe you could explain the situation and ask for the connection, or at least ask for and extra pc where you can surf. Good Luck.
Thank GOd i'm left that company already.. now I can surf and chit chat all day long...:p:D

No Internet  Are these people living in the Ice Age, I mean it's the 21st century!
I just hope they don't let you use Pentium I's or XT's
Seeing the fact that they still live with dinosaurs!
Good luck man!

Big Congrats..by the way.. no internet access at all is insane... many companies do have restricted internet access.. even that is a pain but nothing at all is really really amazing.
You could try finding out the reasons for this. Most probably you will get the answer to be "Security" :D . Cheers.
