Server Programming

I've written a server program that has a gui but I would like to seperate the server and the gui aspects into seperate programs. Thus allowing the server to run when the computer is started and than later start up the gui that effects the server. How do I do? The only thing I can think of is to make the gui a client program that connects to the server.
