What is a dll file and how does it work

I am getting involved in databases and pulling information from one application and putting it into another. I know this is done using a dll file, however, I don't know how they work or what dll even stands for.


Please help an old COBOL programmer here

dll = Dynamic Link Library

Code is loaded dynamically and can be executed.

A .DLL file that contains one or more functions compiled, linked, and stored separately from the processes that use them.
