How to update PATH variable in WINNT

How to update the system PATH variable in WINNT through a c++ code. I have tried to update the registry where the system path variable is found but that does't help(mycomputer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\SESSION MANAGER\ENVIRONMENT). Any body knows ...?
