Edit control - hyphens

In my form view edit controls, hyphens ("-")
doesnot appear at all when I type in them. What
could be the problem. When I press Alt+0173, hyphens appear in the edit control, but not when I type '-'.

This may be a silly suggestion/question but is it a number field? number fields don't allow hyphens to the best of my knowledge.
