RichEditCtrl - Extracting Format

Is there a way by which I can extracr formats from the RichEditCtrl without selecting the text. In my case I have to do it for all the characters, which shows alot of flicker, though I tried it with HideCaret too but nothing helps. I tried it with even WM_SETREDRAW, but in vain. Please help.
