Keyboard messages go to parent window

My application's main window was working fine until I decided to make the desktop window its parent, for some reasons. When I did so, all my keyboard messages started going to the parent (desktop) window instead of coming to mine (I verified this). What can I do to have the desktop window as parent and yet receive keyboard messages?
