Shell, Explorer File Type and ICON

In Explorer's directory listing, the file's type is displayed as "C++ Source File" for .cpp, "Word Document" for *.doc, etc...

How can I get hold of this information in my own special built-in explorer, which is part of our app?

BTW, the same goes for the displayed ICON.....
