I need a book which explains how to create a user interface that isnt based on dialog boxes. Im having trouble understanding the concepts of child windows and run time classes because all the books I have only deal with modal dialog boxes.

There is a book I bought at Barnes and Noble called Mastering Visual C [ version Number ]. I was using version 4, but I have seen the book for version 6. It was pretty good at showing me different things about the different types of windows and frames. However, I would have to say that the only way to gain that information , from what I have found, is experience with the compiler and the language.

I've found Jeff Prosise's book "Programming Windows 95 with MFC" to be invaluable. It covers a lot of MFC, using both doc\view and non-doc\view methods of creating mfc apps. I refer to it every day. It has a lot of samples as well. In my opinion, its the best mfc book out there.

I recently bought the new version of this book "Programming Windows With MFC Second Edition" and although I am only about half way through it (it's about 1,200 pages) I would have to agree that it is the most through book on MFC I have ever seen. However if you already have a good understanding of MFC and just want to learn how to do all the cool UI stuff that profesional apps do I sugest you take a look at "The MFC Answer Book" by Eugene Kain. It is a great book that is written in a FAQ format, and answers advanced UI questions like you seem to be looking for. They even provide samples from the book at http://www.mfcfaq.com/ so you can see for yourself if it's what your looking for.

For understanding of child windows, I have used the book "MFC classes [ver #]". It is pretty good, and is not very difficult.
