Different test reports have different recommendations as to the 'best' and different versions from the same supplier also can have different results - the latest version may have a worse rating than a previous version! IMO Avast is the best free solution with Kaspersky as the best non-free. Note that Kaspersky's interface is not the easiest to navigate once you start to get into its configuration options. Norton and Eset are pretty good alternatives to Kaspersky.

None. If you're infected, you'll need to wipe the hard drive, re-install OS and updates, and then get an AV. Microsoft has a good one that's free.

I use Nod32 for such cases. Its performance and efficiency are good enough.
