adapter is hidden from the network and Dial-up Connections folder?

Hey guys, I'm using windows XP Professional. I recently transfered my hardware to a different case which means I switched both my PCI Modem and NIC to different slots on my motherboard. Windows apparently doesn't like this and has generated the following message everytime I try to assign an IP to my Network Connection via my NIC:

The IP address XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX you have entered for this network adapter is already assigned to another adapter Name of adapter. Name of adapter is hidden from the network and Dial-up Connections folder because it is not physically in the computer or is a legacy adapter that is not working. If the same address is assigned to both adapters and they become active, only one of them will use this address. This may result in incorrect system configuration. Do you want to enter a different IP address for this adapter in the list of IP addresses in the advanced dialog box?

I have viewed this microsoft KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=269155) but it didn't help at all. Anyone know how I can fix this problem? In device manager both my Modem and NIC drivers show up as #2.

I had sorta the same problem under win2000 but it was from swapping two nic cards (that is I had two nics in my machine) the uninstall worked for me. I think I just had to remove the hidden entries. Or I might have uninstalled all of them and allowed them to be re-installed on boot again.

Perhaps you should remove one of the pieces of hardware, and do the uninstall. Then boot and allow it to find the one piece, then shutdown and add the second piece of hardware and boot.

Just an idea.

I see the hidden device that needs to be deleted, but I get a message saying:

"Cannot uninstall device. It may be required to boot the computer"

All it is is a duplicate hidden driver in device manager of my LinkSys NIC. It won't let me remove it. I tried to remove the NIC from my computer and THEN boot up and uninstall, yet it still does the very same thing! Help!

cripes this was like 2 1/2 years ago this happend to me, umm try and disable the device can you do that? Then try and un-install it.

You might have to boot to safe mode without network support...

I just seem to recall I was able to un-install the devices but I don't recall if I had to disable/boot safe mode,I had a number of duplicates...per NIC as I recall...
