Igor, I appreciate it. You are really helpful! I especially appreciate your idea of using out-of-proc server that's housed in an exe vs dll. That does solve me a lot of trouble. (Especially your...

It actually just returns your usual HRESULT. So I guess doing SUCCEEDED() may do the job for checks for success.
No, I don't. Sorry, Igor, can you repeat how one can change that default timeout...

Yeah, no problem. I'll ignore it. Plus I don't think I'll be rebuilding this COM server once it's done. I just need a quick shim for the JScript code.
I'm more concerned about those 3 points I...

Oh, I see. That's really cool. And you're right. I was totally missing it. Thanks for bringing it up.
There are some concerns that this brings up though. So let me hear your take on it:

Victor, what do you mean by close IDE editor? What? Completely? How else would I work with the source code then? If you mean just that file, then like I said above, it's not open:
June 23rd, 2015, 01:16 PM
Arjay, I don't have it open. And if I remove it from the solution itself, then I start getting linker errors about missing symbols.
June 23rd, 2015, 12:17 PM
Also, Igor, on the side note. Why am I getting this when I build your project?
June 23rd, 2015, 12:13 PM
I would surely love to have only a 32-bit build and eliminate messing with 64-bit-only DLL, but I'm still not quite clear on how this .exe approach would work. That .exe has to run somehow for the...

Appreciate it! ATL it is! And if I link it statically it doesn't drag as much "weight" as MFC either...
One last follow up question, guys. Since I will need to make both 32-bit and 64-bit builds...

@Igor: I need to be able to recreate it for VS 2008. Can you give me general steps how you made that ComDll project?
June 19th, 2015, 10:05 PM
I should admit, that I do not have much experience working with COM/automation. My goal is to create a C++ module whose methods could be exposed/called by a JScript script running in...
Thank you for the explanation guys.
So is there a lot of code to switch from in-proc to out-of-proc COM? Like I said I've never tried out of proc in my limited exposure to COM.
Also Arjay, you...
Thanks. You have a point there.
One follow-up. I'm not entirely sure what's the difference between the in-proc and out-of-proc COM server. I understand that the former one is when my DLL is loaded...
No, not really. I was just trying to eliminate complexity, but it seems like I'm only adding it, hah?
You see, I am not really good with COM, but it seems like if I do in-process DLL, I will have...
My goal is to create a COM interface in my Windows local service, written with C++/MFC, whose methods could be called from a Windows Script Host JScript code running under a logged in interactive...

I might have gotten to the bottom of it.
This looks like a bug in the IE 11 rendering engine. (Interestingly enough, I ran it on a machine with IE 8 and it worked fine.) I discovered this by...
April 29th, 2015, 08:38 PM
Arjay, I can't. That (html) report must be generated at 8:30 AM.
April 29th, 2015, 01:06 PM
Thank you for your input guys.
I can't run any tests on it now until the end of the work day in that office. I do remember trying to kill the screensaver earlier, or wake the screen, using the...

Hmm. Well, I guess I can do this "hack", but at this point I'm curious if not showing a page is an expected behavior from IE?
April 29th, 2015, 05:13 AM
Can you elaborate on it?
As for CSIDL_APPDATA folder, I'm obviously calling it from my module's process and not from the screensaver.
April 29th, 2015, 04:51 AM
Well, I'm not sure. Web browser's behavior usually doesn't depend on a screensaver, does it?
Now I'm thinking if maybe Microsoft added some sort of a mode into IE where it doesn't render pages if...

I'm making a small MFC module that should generate a report (formatted using HTML) and then display it for a user on schedule at 8:30 AM every day. Pretty straightforward stuff.
November 25th, 2014, 03:51 AM
Arjay, thanks. I tried playing with those two WMI classes and although Win32_DiskPartition seems to have the 'BootPartition' property that looks like what I need, I couldn't find a way to connect to...
November 24th, 2014, 02:33 PM
Hmm. Good points guys. And yes, I do need it from within Windows. In other words, my app needs to know if the Windows it runs under is installed on an active partition. (And to OReubens's point, I'll...

My goal is to know if Windows is installed on an active disk partition. Any ideas?
