    Number of hardware processors (cores)

    Hi guys. This is way out of my league but I thought someone here might have some ideas...

    Apparently there are various methods (GetSystemInfo() / GetLogicalProcessorInfoEx() etc) which can return...

    Perl Re: Running a system command

    Yeah, I must admit I'm seriously contemplating that. If I rewrite it in C++ it'll most likely work first time. And even if it doesn't, at least I know I'll be able to fix it !

    I don't understand...

    Perl Re: Running a system command

    Hi OReubens. I'm not very familiar with Perl but I assumed that's what its system command did?

    I found this new set of perl statements. These ones work in Windows 7 and Windows XP - but not for...

    Perl Re: Running a system command

    Bumping this question as a new problem has come to light....

    The perl system command seems to work - AND - if the launched program outputs any text, I can see the text in my command prompt...

    Re: GetStdHandle() (Windows 8 / 8.1)

    Thanks OReubens. I swapped my original order and tested on Win7 and Win8.1 (where it now appears to work on both). I haven't tried XP yet but hopefully that'll work too. :thumb:

    Re: GetStdHandle() (Windows 8 / 8.1)

    Interesting, thanks for the tip... I modified the code to look like this:-

    BOOL bConsole; FILE *pStdOut = 0, *pStdErr = 0;

    AllocConsole();
    HANDLE hStdOut =...

    GetStdHandle() (Windows 8 / 8.1)

    A few years ago I asked a question about how to attach a DOS console to a Windows app (i.e. so that if the app was launched from a DOS console, the user would be able to see printf output etc). In a...

    Re: Fatal errors C1047 and C1900

    In the end I deleted all the 'build generated' files (.suo / .ncb / .exp / .ilk / .pdb etc). Then I did a Clean, followed by a full Rebuild of the project. Voila! It seems to have worked! Many thanks...

    Fatal errors C1047 and C1900

    I've encountered a really bizarre problem this morning. I've been using VS2005 for many years without any problems. This morning I needed to rebuild a library called gdk-pixbuf which I've built many...

    Re: _environ

    Thanks 2kaud. I should have mentioned that I need to keep the solution portable if possible - so something cross-platform would be preferable.

    [Edit...] this turned out to be due to a logic...

    [RESOLVED] _environ

    I'm working with some code that uses the environment array _environ. It contains a few sections which look like this:-

  12. Re: This application requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way

    Hi Igor, you're in the right area but that's not exactly what's happening....

    To give some background, I'm converting an app that was written by somebody else. The app was originally written for...
  13. This application requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way

    Does anyone happen to know what kind of programming problem causes the above error dialog? I've always been curious about it.

    AFAIK it isn't cause by an unhandled exception (an unhandled exception...

    Compiler warning C4275

    I'm building somebody else's source code and I'm constantly getting compiler warnings like this:-

    Re: Improving productivity

    By the law of averages alone, I guess that must be right - but you'd be amazed at how many people think they work better at night when in fact, they don't. Musicians are probably the classic example....

    Re: Improving productivity

    It might sound old fashioned but for me, the secret to productivity lies in the old adage, "early to bed, early to rise". If I were to start work at 9:00am it would probably be 8:00pm by the time I...

  20. Are these static variables local or global ?

    I came across the following code today and I was a bit surprised that it worked:-

    std::string func_A ()
    {
    static std::string x;

    if (!x.empty())
    return x;
    else...

    Re: Is advanced seaching working properly..?

    Many thanks Steve. One more thing...

    I don't know if it's still the case - but immediately after the "upgrade" users suddenly needed to set a 'limit' on how far back a search would go. The default...

    Re: Is advanced seaching working properly..?

    Yep, you're absolutely right. Typing that text into Google brings up a whole bunch of results (all of them perfectly valid).

    Why can't we make searching work any more on this site? It seemed...

    Is advanced seaching working properly..?

    Yeah, or I suppose the other option is to add one of those "captcha" utilities to our form. Although they can be annoying for a genuine user I can fully understand why they've become so popular. What...
