Maybe I'm on the wrong path here, but, isn't it possible to create a new thread for the subroutine. That way you could do whatever you want while the subroutine runs in the background.

Are you creating the document by hand or with an app/macro?

The easiest way probably would be to create a macro with VBA in the Excel file that creates a connection to the SQL server and then adds the information.

Another quite easy way to prevent errors from occuring is to do the following.
textbox1.text = "" & rs("Field")
Works everytime for me ..
