What I usually prefer is using plain text logging to disk file (lightning fast :) ) along with a tool that autodetects file update and dispalys the file tail (in my case it's always FAR Manager...

You might notice I never said that. The point was to make you read those MSDN articles and see that this is BeginPaint that validates the update region, and WM_ERASEBKGND has nothing to do with that....

You need to go some other way. Using IMediaDet interface maybe, or creating your own directshow filter. Or switching to other technology like ffmpeg, gstreamer, opencv, etc. Will depend on your goals...
