  1. Re: VS2019 - why doesn't it like vcxproj files any more ?

Interestingly, these seem to be the only two:-

    1) Windows Software Development Kit - ver 10.1.17763.132
    2) Windows SDK AddOn - ver 10.1.0.0

so I don't know where the 8.1 option's coming from...
  2. Re: VS2019 - why doesn't it like vcxproj files any more ?

Thanks 2kaud. For the hell of it I might try installing the 8.1 SDK anyway but I'm curious to know what happens (on your machine) if you right-click on a project and then choose...
  3. Re: VS2019 - why doesn't it like vcxproj files any more ?

Ah I see... so when I was seeing 8.1 that meant my apps would be targeted to run on Win8.1 and later - whereas 10.0.xxxx will target Win10 only.

How can I return to my original Win8.1 status? Does...
  4. Re: VS2019 - why doesn't it like vcxproj files any more ?

Here's the scenario... I just bought a new PC and I'm in the process of transferring stuff to it. Previously I'd been building with VS2015 so this time I opted for VS2019. Obviously, my projects were...
  5. Re: VS2019 - why doesn't it like vcxproj files any more ?

It looks like I'll need to create a 'default' property sheet (i.e. that'll add various folder paths etc to all my projects) but I can't remember how I did that with VS2015. Could you remind me..? In...
  6. Re: VS2019 - why doesn't it like vcxproj files any more ?

Yep, you just beat me to it, 2kaud! After a bit more experimenting I realised that all the various compilers etc get installed as something called "Extensions" (and nothing at all got installed...
  7. VS2019 - why doesn't it like vcxproj files any more ?

Until recently I'd been using VS2015. I've attached a small snip from my Solution Explorer showing a VS Solution which contains some sub-projects. You'll see some sub-projects called liblo, intl, and...

    Confusion about Runtime DLL numbering

Historically, the MSVC runtime DLL's were identified by their version numbers. So as an example, programs written with MSVC8 would use msvcr80.dll and anything written with MSVC10 used msvcr110.dll...

Re: Windows 10 on the cheap

After a bit more research I think the restriction with these cheaper licenses is that they're OEM products (i.e. not transferable). So you can license your existing PC but if you upgrade it later to...

Re: Windows 10 on the cheap

Thanks 2kaud. Yes I did save a disk image but it was on a totally different machine with different hardware etc (so probably wouldn't be much use for dual booting my Mac). The OS itself did come from...

Re: Windows 10 on the cheap

Yeah... back in the days of Windows XP I got caught by a similar scheme which turned out to be a scam. But these ones mostly seem legit. Even some respected web sites seem in favour. AFAICT the only...

    Windows 10 on the cheap

A couple of years ago (when Win10 was still available for free) I installed it on a PC here. Unfortunately at that time it was ludicrously unreliable and I ended up removing it - but a couple of...

    Re: Weird networking problem

Thanks for the link 2kaud - in fact, that article specifically mentions the two error messages I reported above so it looks like a promising explanation. It's starting to get late here so I'll read...

    Re: Weird networking problem

BTW - those net view commands give sensible output if I run them from the Win10 machine. But if I run from a Win7 machine they give this:-

    Re: Weird networking problem

Yes that's right but I've just discovered something quite interesting...

If I nominate a folder for sharing on the Win10 machine - then I map a network drive to it (on one of the Win7 machines)...

    Weird networking problem

I'm not really expecting a solution here but I'm hoping someone can suggest a forum where I could maybe get help with this....

    Basically I've got 2 x Windows 7 PC's here and they're networked...

    MD5 checksum

Is there anything within Windows that'll show me the MD5 checksum value for a given file? Or if there isn't - does anyone know of an app (preferably free!) that'll show it?
  18. Re: Windows 10 ISO file (maybe an older version)

No - OS-X Mojave won't install anything earlier than Windows 10

I guess I could try that but apparently it's the actual ISO size which causes the problem (> 4GB)

    Not AFAIK - but...
  19. Windows 10 ISO file (maybe an older version)

I've been forlornly trying to install Windows 10 on an Apple Mac Pro (using Boot Camp). The Mac Pro is currently running OS-X Mojave. To give you some background... Mojave (for whatever reason) won't...
  20. Returning a reference to (--the contents of--) a local variable

I know it's bad practice to return a reference to a local variable - but what about returning a reference to the contents of a local variable? I've just come across this code in a program I'm working...

    Re: Choosing between overloads

This isn't absolutely identical but it produces a very similar error (C2593, rather than C2666) :-

    Choosing between overloads

I'm working on a project which I need to build with MSVC 2008. It uses a 3rd-party library which defines a struct which looks like this:-
