Although a little outdated, it's still valid: "Automation Programmer's Reference" by Microsoft Press.
If you plan to automate Word, you should also read about the Word Automation Object Model on MSDN.

Is this supposed to be a joke, homey - or is it just pure ignorance?

The term "Automation" has multiple meanings and I think that the subject of that book is not Windows Automation.

I used the United States Library of Congress catalog to find the following. The US LOC I think does not have books published outside the US so there might be other books published elsewhere. Also my search criteria might not have gotten all relevant books.

    Description: xi, 477 p. : ill. ; 23 cm.

    Notes: Includes index.
    Subjects: Object-oriented programming; OLE; ActiveX.
    Other authors: Microsoft Corporation.
    Control No.: 4960835

    Title: OLE 2 programmer's reference.
Published: Redmond, Wash. : Microsoft Press, c1994.
    Description: 2 v. : ill. ; 23 cm.
    Series: Microsoft professional editions
    LC Call No.: QA76.76.W56M52325 1993

Creating programmable applications with OLE automation.
