    Lost Product Key

Well, I have a mess. I recently switched to Mac and in doing so, threw away all my old backup CDs. On one of my backup CDs was the product key for my copy of Visual Basic 6. I might have the original box somewhere at my parent's home.

Is it possible to retrieve the product key from the installation on my computer?

    Re: Lost Product Key

I just seached the registry, and couldn't find it. It must be hashed.
I think a call to MS might be in order. They can replace a key, although there might be a fee for it.

Yeah. I have read that you can get it at support.microsoft.com, but I can't find it.

I *think* I read someplace that the license gets buried in the exe. Not sure and haven't researched it.

    Re: Lost Product Key

Sounds like a nice file to upload, for anyone thinking of backup.
Mine is written down on a sticky, stuck to the top of CD1.

I'm not sure how much the key matters, though, as long as it installs.

You didn't specify which version, but I think mine is xxx-xxxxxx or something close. All numeric.

I am not sure if this does not voilate the AUP, the file you are talking about can be used for some other things too. Probably the best option would be to consult MS and get a Key. A call to the Tech Support guys should be enough.

    Shuja from Kashmir India !!

It would not violate the AUP coz, I can always search the registry deeply & find my things there.
I have developed a program which searches the registry called VB installations & pull out the key from there.

    got it?
    Rahul
If I deliberately disclose this to the forum "find your key thru this" then I would have caused something illegal.
& furthermore I am not changing the key just finding it out.
the key gets converted to ASCII along with some hex codes you need to reconvert them to the original & show it to the customer.

digilienna is right it must be like 123-112233 like thing.

You can do it yourself, but publishing such programs/applications in the Forum will definetly voilate the AUP or even usinf the PMs to do it for that matter will voilate AUP. Read this:

How can that be illegal if the license is legitimate on a persons machine. If you share how to decode keys in the registry, that is not illegal because I already have full access to the registry.

    Re: Lost Product Key

I think Shuja Ali is essentially correct. That is, if the key you get is the one you must enter to install the product, then anyone could retrieve a key from one system to use on another.

Even if there is a legitimate reason for obtaining the number, distributing such a method is at the very least potentially a violation of the AUP. The gray areas bring the matter further into the realm of being illegal.

I believe this is what registering the product with the author/manufacturer is for, at least in part. You should be able to contact them to get your original key, or perhaps a replacement key.

    Re: Lost Product Key

Whoa. Don't get me wrong. I don't want someone else's key. I only want my own.

What I am saying is...if someone can get a key from their registry, I can get one from mine. I just need to know where and how to un-hash it.

I do understand that. However, if the retrieved key can then be used to install the product on another system, it would be against the AUP to post how to do that here on the forums.

In VB, you can click Help>>About..., and see a serial number. This is not the number you need to enter to install it, so showing it doesn't give rise to additional installations. A backup is "just in case", and if you still use the product, it would be wise to maintain your backup as well.

If the installation CD key is retrievable, I've little doubt you can find out how via Google. What you do off the forums is your own business. Good luck.

    Windows is a Product itself.
Thats why it has a Product Key/Serial.
I purchased it too,I can See my serial anytime I wish.
Do youknow that few months back there was a peculiar type of Hacking which only stole your Serial/Product key numbers when you were online?
you purchased WinXP & paid for it.
When you go for an activation if required afterwards the MS people would say sorry this number is already used by someone else !!!
    How could they?.

    WIz,
Insert a CD for installation in any computer where it is not installed(any MS Product)
supply the number which is ORIGINAL & does not belong to that Cd which you are installing.
    What do you See?
    "This number is not VALID."
Please retry & if you have lost the ........ then Contact Microsoft...Click okay to Quit.

    Have you ever seen this?
