Can anyone Trace email??? I'll Pay You Money.

Hi I tried selling my car to someone online and they ended up stealing $2250.00 from me and I was wondering if anyone knows how to trace an email back to the individual that is using an AOL email address. I tried looking through the header and using that information but I guess AOL headers all show the same location.

So I was wondering if there is something that I or someone else could attach to an email so that when he opens it, it will collect data that would be useful in locating this individual.

If someone gives me information on how to go about doing this or does it theirselves and it results in the police finding this person I will give them $50.00. Contact me if you are wanting to try this task my email address is kevins963@hotmail.com.

Also for those who are wanting to take on this task, the scammers email address is Lones98@aol.com. I also have his phone number which it says is one of those netzero ones where you talk through your computer if that would help any.

The header information for one of his emails to me is:

    X-Message-Status: n:0
    X-SID-PRA: Lones98@aol.com
    X-SID-Result: Pass

I think you chose a wrong forum.

Anyway, even if the mail is traced to some location, you need some information from his ISP to confirm that he was the guy who sent you that e-mail, is that possible for you ?

I have AOL, and I can see that Lones98@aol.com is online at this moment.

You should try talking to AOL about this.

I'm not a great believer in censorship but the lack of security in emails is an absolute scandal. It's a perfect example of how a totally unregulated medium can quickly become susceptible to corruption.. Scammers are finding more and more devious ways of sending spoof emails and nobody seems to be doing anything about it. I've even had emails sent to me which purport to come from my own email address!! I shudder when I think that someone might be sending emails to other people (in my name) and I can do absolutely nothing to stop it.

Kevin - I suspect that your chances of finding out anything about the sender are very slim. The only hope you have is that the scammer used a genuine AOL address. If so, I'm sure that AOL will help. These big companies are very aware of their responsibilities regarding fraud. However, there's a very strong chance that the AOL return address has been spoofed.

Incidentally, your own email provider (hotmail) is one of the biggest targets for email scammers. I never accept any emails from a hotmail address (they're all filtered out by by spam package). In my experience (an I'm just talking about my personal experience) around 95% of emails sent to me from a hotmail address are bogus.

That explains some irrational displays of hostility

What I don't get is, if you were the seller of said car, then why on earth did you send the "potential" buyer money?

I know this doesn't answer your question but.....
