Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by

Users can set their status to "invisible" (not exactly the term used in the user settings), and one of the consequences of that, besides the "green light" next to their user name in the post header not lighting up while they're online, is that they're counted as online members but don't show up in the list. I use the full-blown "Who's Online" quite rarely, but that's at least how the list at the bottom of the forum root page behaves. Three invisible users online at a time isn't really unusual.

The db crash happened again. It becomes a routine, you know...

Besides, I noticed during last few weeks that VC++ Programming forum gets not functional somewhat around 8-9 AM GMT quite often. Are there some tasks scheduled for the time, or it's just my poor luck?
    Best regards,
    Igor

    Re: New Forum Update

How is the indexing process coming along? My impression is that I still can't find anything in posts from a long time ago, even though I'm sure I'm entering valid keywords.

This might be significant too... the main page (i.e. the one that lists all the forums) says that the chit-chat forum has a total of 4,843 threads. But when I go into that forum I only see 1-12 threads out of 12. Similarly the Visual C++ forum claims a total of 253,310 threads - but when I tried going into that forum just now it listed 1-25 of 92.

It's a similar story in most of the other forums too AFAICT. It looks like the developers simply threw away everything that existed before they started their work.

What are your settings at the bottom of te threads? Are you set to see all posts from the beginning, or just the last 30 days (or some other setting). You should check that.

Frankly, what's going on? Since the update the site is slow as ... (I have fiber connection). Pressing 'New post' shouldn't result in minute waits should it?

At least for searching, these two seem to be tightly related. I entered the Visual C++ thread where I found the combo box for viewing all posts from the beginning. I wondered if that might improve my search results when searching for stuff in old historical posts. And it does! I searched for items posted by me containing the word "dialog". But the search took 10-15 minutes. Previously, I'm sure this would have completed in under a minute.

    Re: New Forum Update

Two major issues, noticed immediately after the update, still have not been resolved:

    1. The site is slow as molassas. Replies to threads and new threads take 60 seconds or more, resulting in considerable frustration to all posters (especially to the more experienced posters who try to do many things simultaneously on the site), as well as the occassional double-post.

    2. The search function still does not work. In a search just now for all of my posts that mention the word "socket", the search located just 7 items (even with the default setting of "any date and newer"). Google, on the other hand, finds more than 6600 with the search string of site:codeguru.com "mikeathon" "socket". 6600 is too high, but understandable since it includes both the "print" version of the post and the standard version. Obviously the 7 items found by Codeguru searching is ridiculously low.

Brad, when are these items going to be resolved? In looking over the instant thread, both of these issues were reported to you on June 20th, the very first day of the update. On July 3rd, in response to a follow-up post on the searching issue, you indicated that the "search indexes are being rebuilt". The slowness issue has been mentioned time and again, with no apparent progress.

It's nearly two months since the update, and the inability to address these issues becomes increasingly frustrating.

The alexa.com site reports that the page view percentage for Codeguru has dropped 10% mostly in the past two months, and that the traffic ranking has fallen from around 9,600 to around 13,000, also in the past two months. See screenshots below from http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/codeguru.com. I would be willing to bet that these drops are at least partly a result of issues related to the update. The alexa.com site also reports that the site's average loading time is a "very slow" 4.246 seconds (93% of sites are faster). A reasonable question to ask yourself is this: Is the new emphasis on advertisements (and presumably the pricing structure for them) justified in the face of these declining statistics?

    Mike

PS: Similar results obtained with IE version 9.0, IE verison 8.0 and Firefox version 13.0.1
PPS: I apologize if the tone is perceived as unduly harsh. Perhaps it would have been better to be more diplomatic.

It's 4:30 on Thursday afternoon. The last post in the Visual C++ forum was over 9 hours ago. Participation seems way down to me. I've seen that happen to a couple of other sites where an upgrade didn't go well. People leave and they don't come back.

Oh yes! It was not once during these months when I thought about leaving. The situation looked a bit frustrating to me, and now it gets annoying. You know, I don't care at all about the site looks, instead I'd like it to function same smooth as before.

    Re: New Forum Update

MikeAThon's post with the alexa.com results made me curious as to whether there have been fewer new members per day/week/whatever since the update. So I tried to see the members list to knock up a quick graph. The first problem I encountered was that I couldn't find a link to it anywhere. But after I remembered the url I typed http://forums.codeguru.com/memberlist.php in manually, only to be told "Sorry! The administrator has disabled the list of members.". Is there any reason for this to be disabled?

As to the search problem - could we at least have a bit of honesty as to when/if this will ever be solved? It really shouldn't take this long to fix, which makes me think something really bad has gone wrong. The lack of communication on this is getting more annoying than the original problem...

When the update was made, and these problems showed up, I thought I would just wait a few days before coming back to these forums, as I enjoy helping out. But I have been waiting two months now, and am starting to think they will never be fixed

    Re: New Forum Update

We are having these issues on two of our forums, so I don't alway sremember what I said on one and not the other. Let me summarize some a few things:

There are a few issues we have not fixed. We've pulled in the vBulletin people to help as we believe the software is causing the issues. This is specifically true of the speed.

So - we are still working on the speed.

Membership list was disabled by us. It was one of the things we looked at to see about increasing the spped. We'll see if we can get it back after we get the overall speed issues resolved.

Search should be working. I'll test it as soon as I'm done with this post.

Finally - Alexa #s have always been off for our sites.

Also, I'm getting a lot of message boxes asking if I'm sure I want to leave the page when I click a Firefox bookmark to go somewhere else. That's really annoying.
