$$$ to work and live in NY
Is $50,000/year enough to work and live in NY ?
Given that I eat and spend a lot on regular basis (3 *big* meals/day+snacks+cokes); by big meals I mean my meal is ample with food, not Japanese ones (colorful but too little). I don't know the price, and it is lethal. I also have to support my family financially (ok, give my mom $1500/month).

Sorry, I'm not from NY, therefore cannot give you much information, but I guess you can reduce some of your expenses by making certain adjustments (or compromises) in your life style, such as sharing accommodation, using public transport, stop picking up costly habits (such as smoking like a chimney or drinking too much), sticking to your old cell phone, and may be 2 big meals with 1 normal etc etc.

Thanks everyone for having shared with me your ideas. I have been very sad lately.
@Ledidas, Today I had 2 calls for job interviews tomorrows (one is a US company manly about hardware memory and the other is a UK's about C programming for firmware/hardware devices ). To prepare,
I spent 7 hours today in my office reading only about memory xxx, umtil now my mind 's been really boomed boomed.

I have no clue on how expensive it is in New York but in a Swedish perspective (with the taxes we have here) giving your mother 1500$ / month will probably make your life in NY quite miserable.

Re: $$$ to work and live in NY
$50k to live in NYC? ouch.
think about it -- $50,000 is the starting number. I'll assume that you'll have to remove taxes and other standard expense (FICA, etc.). If I were budgeting, I'd say 32%. Possibly 28%
50,000 starting
16,000 - taxes and such
=================
34,000 take home
You said 1500/month to your mom. That's 18k:
34,000
18,000 -- Mom fee
=================
16,000 -- remainer
Divide that by 12 and you have $1333 a month to live on.
If you eat out for your three meals, then figure $4 for breakfast, $8 for lunch and $15 for dinner, that is $27 a day, or about $810 a month (eating cheap). If you cook, you can do a lot less, but that would require having a place to live with a kitchen. The box that you can afford on the street isn't likely going to have a stove....
$50k in NYC minus a the fee to your mom? Good luck with that.... I don't see it working too well.

Please just state some specific reasons then fly home or decline the job.
