    All advice is offered in good faith only. You are ultimately responsible for effects of your programs and the integrity of the machines they run on.

    Just an aside note:
    MFC is a C++ library built over Windows API. Moreover it has available sources.
    So, each time you have this kind of problems, you can quickly do the following:

    1. Using the wizard, make a simple MFC test application, let's say a dialog-based one;
    2. write some code containing the MFC method to "research", e.g.
         m_list.GetSubItemRect(nItem, nSubItem, LVIR_LABEL, rcSubItem);
    3. put a breakpoint in that line, then start debugging (F5);
    4. when the breakpoint is reached, just step into (F11) and see what's inside MFC.
    5. that's all; eventually you can keep that aplication for further tests and repeat steps 1 to 4.
