Anyone with Xamarin development in VS ?

I constantly receive notices via web and email about the wonders of Xamarin and how it allows users to develop Android and iPhone apps using C# and Visual Studio. I finally installed Xamarin on my VS 2010 (64-bit) Win 7 machine. The project options showed up in the New Project window, but I could never get any of them to work. The result was always some sort of crash. Annoyed, I uninstalled Xamarin and the problems went away, but not my desire to create phone apps. I have successfully built a number of phone apps using Eclipse for Android. The documentation is quite good, there are numerous samples, but the Eclipse interface leaves much to be desired. I would like to hear from anyone who has tried to use Xamarin on Visual Studio - your successes and failures. Thanks.
