Is There A Way To "Push" Data?

I am developing a time clock application. When a user changes his current status (in, out, meeting, vacation, end of day, etc.) his user account is updated on the MySQL server. Current, a timer running on each client application queries the MySQL server every minute for changes. Instead of the overhead of each computer querying every minute, is there a way to only refresh the client applications when a change is made by someone?
