Client-Server connection over internet with both client and server behind a router

I'm attempting to establish a connection between two computers over the internet using winsocket2 library. Both the client and the server are behind a router.

What do I need for the connection to succeed? do both the client and server need to use port-forwarding?

    EDIT:
To be more specific, I want to use the following codes for the server and client from MSDN:
    Client: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...(v=vs.85).aspx
    Server: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...(v=vs.85).aspx

    People! I need help.
Could somebody knowledgeable in this subject help by discussing the issue actively on e.g. skype or any messenger? I'd really appreciate that.

What port are you using? What IP address are you using? Have the router/firewalls been configured to allow access for this port to/from the used IP address? How are you specifying the names/addresses of the computers to use?
All advice is offered in good faith only. You are ultimately responsible for effects of your programs and the integrity of the machines they run on.
