What database should i be using to make online quotations
Hello,
I'm Andy and i run the websites for the company i am currently working for. We want to start taking online payments, but in order to do so, we need a database.
We are in the haulage industry, so we will have to insert our partners rates into the system in order to give our customers the best rate.
Here is how we vision it working:
Visitor inserts their collection and delivery postcodes, quantity of items being shipped and transit time into our forms. The database then scans our rates and selects the best price.
The price will obviously be dependant on the collection and postcode areas, quantity etc.
Is there a piece of software or a database we can make into the back-end of our website?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Andy

What technologies are you using for the website?

We are going purely from a template for this. You can see the template via the link below

We want to make this comparison form work, but it only comes with the front end. There is an optional admin panel which can be purchased, but i am not sure if that will do what we need it to.
Code: CSS , JS , HTML
Thanks for your response.

If you are planning for these guys to host your website, contact them and ask if they offer database support.

As arjay pointed out:
if you are renting webhosting, then typically you're going to be dependant on the provider for the database.
if you are renting a virtual server and installing your own webserver software (iis, apache, ...) then there is typically a database that is "prefered" by the webserver scripting software. In a few cases you don't even have a choice since the server scripting won't allow anything else.
if you are creating a generic webservice, then you can pick anything you want, from a simple textfile to a full fledged database management system.
there is no "best"
there is no "ideal"
the questions you need to ask is what you expect to use the database for. how much data will you be storing, what performance are you expecting, what sort of queries does it need to support, how much are you willing to pay ? then make a "best guess" choice given the requirements and the known or advertised capabilities.
so yes, you'll need to properly analyze the requirements of the software for the storage system, then "go shopping" to find a matching solution.
if you have a very very specific database need, then it may even be necessary to develop your own storage backend system.
