Programming language choice with google map

    HI,

I am new to programming. I want to know which programming language and platform to use for my project. I have gps modules that will be sending coordinates through RF to a master modules that is hooked up to a computer. I will be using this data to show the coordinates on a graph or google map. Would also like to use it offline. What is the best language to do this ?
    regards,

    ken

I haven't used JavaScript but it seems to be available im Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition. It's free so it's just to download and get started.

Since you're new to programming it's going to be overwhelming and tricky but don't give up!

It really depends on what you are doing and the type of application you are trying to create. Is it a windows based app? A Web based app? A Windows service? The type of app you want to create will help guide what language you use.

JavaScript is fine for the client based portions of a web app, but may not be the best choice for other apps.

    HI,
Like I mention earlier, this is window based program. I would like to used something like google map to view live GPS points . Also, this application , including the map has to be used without access to internet. In that case the map has to be preloaded for the area the user is in.
    hope that helps
can i do that with Javascript ?

No, javascript won't work for a Windows application - you can use C#, VB.Net or C++ (or even other languages).

Re: Programming language choice with google map

    Hi,
I did a lot of reading today. Seems that Mapnik is what I<m looking for, it can render maps even offline, (like some garmin GPS).
Then also seems that Python is used to incorporate mapnik into a easy and workable solution.
I am not sure about the following. I want to make is a stand alone application for windows, meaning .exe file, and maybe including an installation. I saw winpython could be an option ? any experience programmers can guide me ?
    thanks
    ken

    Why won't JavaScript work?

I stand corrected. Looks like you can make a stand-a-lone Windows app with JavaScript.

    Off course.

JavaScript is a perfectly fine general language. It has strong long-time MS support (as manifested by its presence in VS 2013 Community Edition).

This time it's Python, next time it may be JavaScript.

I suggested JavaScript because I consider it the most widely used and reasonably accessible scripting language suitable for a newbie. But if Mapnik is what you want and it's most easily handled by way of Python then just go ahead.

On the other hand the true lingua franca of system integration is (native) C++/C. If you're serious about your project and not afraid of a steep learning curve, that's the language I would pick. But beware. Then you must grow up and graduate from naive amateur to engineer and that may not be where you want to go.

So, I'd say try out the Mapnik/Python combo and see where it takes you. View it as a prototyping step or feasibility study if you wish. You can always rewrite it in some other language and/or switch to some other map subsystem later if necessary. Get a development environment for Python. Make sure it can compile to .exe executables. Get a small "hello world" Mapnik application up and running. Try out up front everything you consider stumbling blocks or fear may be difficult. This is how you approach any uncharted territory programming project.

Finally I don't want to alarm you but you should know that Python is a rather special language. It's so called "functional" and will take you slightly out of the programming mainstream.

Support. I think it will be the most appropriate.
