Where do you get good developers for large projects?

I have a web app idea and want to have it developed. The main problem is that I have not had too much success finding good developers for fairly large projects. This project would likely take 3 or 4 months for one developer to finish. I would estimate it would cost $20,000 to $50,000.

I know that most on here are marketers/entrepreneurs (that don't do their own development) so I thought this might be a good place to ask.

Has anyone here had success finding great developers that don't quit before the project is done? What websites are the best for a large project? Odesk? Elance? Local?

The best way to find a developer is probably to look through LinkedIn profiles or toptal. However, I'd also recommend you consider such an option as a dedicated team. Such a team of developers can help you complete both short-term and sustainable long-term projects. Moreover, their greatest benefit is that they don't quit after the deployment of a project and help with the project maintenance.

All advice is offered in good faith only. All my code is tested (unless stated explicitly otherwise) with the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio (using the supported features of the latest standard) and is offered as examples only - not as production quality. I cannot offer advice regarding any other c/c++ compiler/IDE or incompatibilities with VS. The last time I hired EffectiveSoft for my big project. They have quite a large portfolio, so I trusted them. I did not think that they are working on such a large scale. I was surprised by their speed, so I can definitely recommend them.

I just go to College and hire students. They are ready for anything for a penny
