    At a cross roads...

Just thought I'd start a new thread about wot would you do if.... Your heart was no longer in doing programming for a living

Yup folks... I fear that I've reached the end of my career doing programming for a living!! <gasps of terror!!> I've been doing this job for the past 10 years and recently I've woken up in the mornings with sheer terror with the thought of having to write a single line of code...

My enthusiasm and my heart is no longer there anymore, so much so that I'd be happy never to write a single line of code ever again.

As I've never known or done anything outside IT before, I feel that I'm lost at sea about what else I could do...

So I will throw this question to the forum: What do you all think you would do if you felt that you had lost interest in what you do everyday, and no doubt get very well paid for it?

I was thinking of going into teaching secondary school IT, or at least do something useful in Education that relates to IT... other than that I haven't got a clue... Any ideas?

    Regards

I plan to do an MBA in Human Resources and join some IT company/bodyshoppers as a HR consultant (dont know whether it would be easy). But god knows what I actually end up doing!

But after another 5-6 years. I would certainly not like myself still writing code after 5-6 years. I have spent only 3-4 years so far, and i want to complete 10 before quitting

How about finding a part of IT you really enjoy and write a book about it...you would still be doing some code but not everyday and it would only take one good book a year to keep the bill collectors away from the door.

I have gone through the same thing recently but not in IT...I have been a Corporate Pilot flying private jets for the last 22 years..and that really gets old..all you get to see is the airports and the hotels and the road between the two and treated like an over paid bus driver, not the respect you use to get. I also have been doing programming since 1984 and limit the amount I do so I don't get burnt out. But with Corporations cutting cost and outsourcing and Airlines going broke and laying off pilots left and right the future in Aviation seems a little unsure, so I'm coding for now..

I'd just add other things that I like doing. Music comes to mind. I may start playing in public again, after taking a few years off. If I didn't want to program, I'd just take some time off, and probably return to it.

@Vaderman: Sorry to hear about that
I honestly can't tell what I would do - I never thought I would get this far with computers, but nowadays, it's all I live for. I quit music the other day for IT, but what's after that

hey talkin abt writing books , just remembered one thing... anyone seen
"Dave Gorman's: Googlewhack Adventure" really awesome its, you will die laughing

oops sory for goin of the topic. just remembered so shared with you guys

@Vaderman: like you i have also thought that after many years of coding il am also sure that il end up having enough of it. as an alternative i have thought that i might end up in some colleges of institutes and opt for teaching as i kno the difficulties that we faced when we did not have a quality teacher who was not confident of strong with the basics.
but again when you said 10 years down the line. well never tought of putting an end to it so soon . because 10 years in professional life is only about 1/3 of your life.
