    Question Job after graduation

I am going to graduate next May,
I have come to 2 interviews, one failed one succeeded, I'd like to do a business instead of being a programmer.

I don't know how to refuse. It's a big company and I sure have a bright future to work with them. But you know I'd like to follow my dream better, seriously.

    Re: Job after graduation

In general, I would suggest you to pick up the job for some time, improve your skills, learn technologies like a professional and until you are not mature enough to make serious decisions that requires to drive a business smoothly, do not jump into it.

It takes a lot to run a business then what it seems to be. Figure out in which specific direction your natural talent is and apart of finance, what other assets you need to start with(like libraries, which you can make on your own or can buy or can master upon etc), what particular industry segment you'll be targeting, what are your options there to take good $$$ in your pockets by the end of the day...etc etc etc

There are many questions and aspects that you need to learn at this stage, first get enough experience, make a solid business plan/business modal, exercise it for some time to make sure its validity and then hit the accelerator.

    Good luck

    Re: Job after graduation

    Hello voominibear,

Learning how to say no is harder than saying yes.
It is a moment like this, standing at a crossroad that you really learn not just about what life is but what it is that really matters.

to throw away the comfort you know for sure that will blanket you for the rest of the life,
and following your heart takes a courage for what lies ahead is dark and unknown.
One out of tens of thousand, I find a man who has mastered this fear.

you're heavy on this desicion because something's trying to tell you how important this moment in your life will be.
and it is unlikely that you will be given this milestone ever again.

take your time, don't rush it, talk to people who care about you, seek counseling,
but whatever it is that you do,
don't ever let the echos of life silence what your heart says.
    and when everything fails,
    pray.

    God Bless.

Its all possible, only matters how strongly you believe in your own dream and how much determinant you are to make them real.

Good luck & God bless you

    Re: Job after graduation

It may be a little off subject here but i think you may indeed learn a little from this..

I've been programming for atleast the last 25 years,. A programming Job has been my dream job for years. How ever here in South Africa, Programming Firms have been far and few inbetween, and only realy started in the last few years.

I've worked in several companies who's core Business had nothing to do with programming, however i was able to write several small to medium app's to assit them in managing there data more effectively, this essentially gave the the basic programming experience needed to be able to step into a programmers position with a Level of experience, and not just raw knowledge.

I've just returned from a Job interview for a VB6 /.Net Desktop developer position, that is a urgent placement.. And so far i'm the only one with the Exact Correct Experiance and qualifications...

I've even run my own company for 9 years doing programming and data processing, and trust me.. It's always better to have a BOSS to worry about the salary's, than trying to ensure you yourself can pay others.. There have been times when the work for the month was minimal, and barely enough to cover salary's of the staff that I employed..

Also when running your own company the market and business strategies change over time and where some projects were previously outsourced, companies try to complete in house. And this is where you start to loose... And trying to divercify in order to combat this negative effect, leaves you too thinned out to effectivly manage everything and can cause extra expences in employing others to manage everything properly..

Take the Job's you can get... Pick up the Experiance, Learn how the Market is running, what strategies company's are using, and when you see a gap in the market, make sure you have enough savings to live for at least the first 6 months, as this is how long it can take for a new company to start showing any profit.. Sometimes even longer...

It took me 9 months to get my company to show in the green.. and when the market changed, it took 3 months and I was left with such a small client base that I barely showed any profit...

It never hurts to be too causious, but it can be painfull to jump in with out a second thought...

    Re: Job after graduation

If I were you, I'd go for the job that is waiting for me. Why, well, the most important reason I can think of is to become finacially viable in order to persue your dream. Everything is about money.

I can also say that having your own business is not easy, it takes a lot of work and commitment, I'm lucky that I work for my dad, but come December time, I'm not lucky because there may or may not be pay at the end of the month, I personally won't change my position soon, because I love working here, but that's beside the point.

All I can do is try to give you advice, it's all any one can do really, but, the answer lies with you, what you want to do, is ultimately your decision.

The best of luck, and my God bless you with whatever choice you make!

Thanks for the long post, so many reasons I have to consider. I am not dissopinted by failure or when voting a wrong party. I'm just sad I can't be a writer anymore. I love writing.

    Re: Job after graduation

Just a quick update.. Three day's into the Job and i've spent a total of 2 hours at work..

YES... Two hours spent at the office...... the rest of the time was at a clients Office, geting to know the system that they have in place, and rewriting a VB6 project, in .NET ...

Not too bad for my first week at work....
