Sorry, I've spent my whole career on Windows and Microsoft technologies. At this point, I don't think I'm smart enough to try to learn all the ins and outs of Unix. A man's got to know his limitations - so I need to focus on Windows. 
I don't run a desktop manager but use hyper-v and frequently remote in to various desktops. VS 2012 works fine there (and I know that doesn't help you).
