    Re: Programming competition.

We've done competitions here and on other programming sites. In general, they never get the support of people to make them worth the effort. Often people are simply too busy to write a program. Having said that, what does work better is a 'collaborative' project that can be done to both build something and learn.

I think your poll questions are wrong. I think it would be nice to have some code competitions here, but I would not want to take part in it. So, I cannot vote in your poll.

    Re: Programming competition.

Well, IMO...its a good idea, but the operational feasibility is critical. As mentioned by Brad that people are usually busy, I often visit this "Code War" section to find if there is something going on, but its just dead.

It really need to be workout alot. Competitions like that needs alot of energy. There are alot of factors that compromise the implementation of it, like there are one **** of **** good gurus out there and for newbies, its just a dream to stand against them, it has to be categories based upon the skill level, technology (like someone has expertize of network programming doesn't mean that he is not a good programmer since he may be poor in UI) etc etc.

It also needs projection, like if we come up with an event, then it should be alteast 1/2 months from today, so that the participants can get prepared and meanwhile the heat should be building up.

Difference is time zones is another issue, so people in the same group competiting from different geographical location may suffer this.

Then comes the outcome, what we want to acheive out of it. If I sacrifies my weekends for prepration or whatever for this competition, then what is my vision? Different people will have different vision, as for an elite member (with due appolgy, I just want to put an example, hopefully you guys will not shoot me for this ), it may not be very much exciting, since he may already have achieved alot in life and but for a newbie it may have alot of charm in it.

So, its very hard to get alot of different people, from alot of different places, with alot of different pirorities at one place, working for one cause, with same one level of energy. But I like the competitions, if managed well, they are thrilling, aren't they?

Btw, browse through Top Coder, you'll find a competition section there

    Re: Programming competition.

Well...what would be the purpose of such a competition forum? I am fine with having such a forum in the first place but would not participate in it since these kind of things are only driven by the one goal to show that you are better than others in the first place.

And if that is the only thing getting out of this, I wouldn't see any valuable reason in creating one in the first place. However, I am known around here to not really support things like this as one can easily found by looking at my comments about our rating/reputation system etc. for example. I know it seems to be human nature to always try to find a way to show that you are better than others in a particular area (and of course deny it at the same time when being asked) and I simply think that is the wrong motivation. There have been always people around here which mysteriously always became quite active as long as there were any kind of rating feature but falls into complete silence as soon as this was gone...

There is of course some difference between a competition forum and the rating system, however, my point is simply that I would like to see some more value than simply exposure of people.

Just my two cents of course...

    Thumbs down Re: Programming competition.

I think a Miss/Mister Codeguru contest would be better.

I support that idea. The objective should be to elect the least muscular person as Mr.CodeGuru

i'll be a very suitable candidate for that....
*i am very skinny, but still is cute*

    To Be On Topic::

a programming competition is fine, but i don't think i could even compete with the "guru"s here.. they are all in a different level than me, not that i'm afraid, its just won't be fare for newbies like me to compete with the 'GURUS'..

    /it won't b a fight,it would be a slaughter..
