What's the difference between implicitly and explicitly assigning a Connection object ?

I'm baffled by a various ways in opening a recordset in ADO, in fact, what's the drawback and advantage of having implicitly / explicitly declared a Connection object ? Which method is the fastest, more robust and taking less system resources ?
