Is it possible to access AciveX COM objects using the IUnknown interface?

I located an article entitled "HOWTO: Call CLSID And ProgID Related COM APIs in Visual Basic". This code example uses functions in ole32.dll to manipulate CLSIDs. Does this library contain the functions to expose the IUnknown interface? How do you get documentation of the ole32.dll functions?
