How do I get bootable windows xp cd?

I have had a hard drive failure on an old (Sony VAIO 2001) Windows XP computer.
I have replaced the C drive with a new drive.

Now I need a bootable XP CD/DVD.

I have three CD's that came with the computer

[*]System Recovery CD (the computer does not boot from this. I have already tried)
[*]Application Recovery CD
[*]Driver Recovery CD


I have searched on the internet for a solution. (see http://www.gelsana.com/xp.htm for a list of my search results)
So far, most of the sites I have found requires me to have an active Windows XP OS already to get files from.
One Microsoft site required me to use a series of floppy discs to use -- I do not have a floppy drive on the computer I am typing from now.

I have been told that I have to buy a new copy but I am not sure if that is true. First of all, does Microsoft even sell Windows XP anymore? Secondly, if the only legal way to get one is to buy one, why does Microsoft offer a free way to get the bootable XP system discs in the form of a series of floppies for free here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994 ?

They are not the entire OS, they are just bootable setup disks. You still need the original CD/DVD that has all of XP on it.

When you bought the computer, the first thing it NAGS you to do is to make BACKUP COPIES for your computer.

It asks every time the machine starts up, for this very reason!

If you need it repaired, order a system recovery setup disk from Sony

What if Sony says the Computer is too old and they do not have a System Disk ? What if Sony suggest I purchase a Windows XP retail? Does Microsoft still sell Windows XP?

Not to the public. If you have a KEY, someone might loan you a disk, as long as it is the SAME VERSION, SAME Processor (x86/x64), and same language pack.

The number on the side of the machine can be called in to activate, if you can convince them that the computer hard drive died, and you just replaced it.


I'd go get a copy of Windows 7, though. Your PC will run 50 times better.

Need 1gb of RAM, 1ghz Processor, and 20gb of disk space.

There's even an upgrade wizard that can transfer settings from XP.
