Manipulating strings

Can anyone direct me to a site that can educate me on manipulating strings using a class structure.

I am not to clear on strings, except how to strlen them. For example, returning a pointer to the first occurrence of a specified charater or return the number of consonants etc. I just want information on strings and how to manipulate them. I was hoping to read about it in some web site. I hope that clarifies some things.
