I have a new job assignment which has something to do with Raster Operations. Can anybody tell me why a need to have 256 ROPs?

Because there are 2^(2^n) different boolean functions that have n operands.
For n=3 this gives 256. In other words, there are 256 different ways to
combine colors of source, destination and brush.
