I am trying to obtain a Java compiler to learn Java as a beginner. Does anyone know which one is the most commonly used (MS Visaul J++ ??), where to buy and approximate price ? It can be a previous version.

You will need to download the Java API from Sun. With it, you get a free Java compiler. This is the most commonly used compiler, because it is 'true' java. Microsoft taints Java with proprietary garbage.
