7 wonders of the modern world
I know that over the years people have nominated different building or monuments to the list of the 7 wonders of the modern world. But I think it would be interesting to know what people here at CG think. So the question is, what are, in your opinion, the 7 man-made buildings and/or monuments that would deserve the title of "wonders of the modern world".
Please select exactly 7. It would also be great if you tell why you selected the 7 ones.
Re: 7 wonders of the modern world
Yup! I hope chose only seven.
Re: 7 wonders of the modern world
I voted for:
- Angkor Wat, Cambodia: because it's so outstanding symmetrical and imposing; building it in the middle of jungle must have been a huge task
- Channel Tunnel, UK and France: because it's the most outstanding engineering project of the modern times in my opinion
- Great Wall, China: because it's the biggest construction ever, and some say it can be seen even from the Moon (which I doubt); 1 million died to build it
- Eiffel Tower, Paris, France: beautifully simple and complex in the same time; the cityscape from the top it's amazing
- Statue of Liberty, New York, USA: because it's a symbol of liberty
- St. Pietro Basilica, Vatican: because no other church in the world can match this one
- Taj Mahal, Agra, India: because it's probably the most beautiful building in the world
Re: 7 wonders of the modern world
I voted for "Acropolis, Athens, Greece" because the greeks' enemies (the Turks) filled it with gun powder, since the greeks' allies (the Venetians), knowing that, bombed it to blowup.
Re: 7 wonders of the modern world
Missing from the list: The WTC Twin Towers. Like most of the ancient 7 wonders, they are no longer there - and their historical symbolic value is certainly more than significant.
Re: 7 wonders of the modern world
They made it to the list now...
Re: 7 wonders of the modern world
depends how you define a wonder of the modren world. I would only consider things that have ACTUALLY been built in the mordern world to be eligable... Surely??
Re: 7 wonders of the modern world
No, rather things that still stand today, even if they were built in the middle age or antiquity. Things that you look at with admiration and wonder "who did they make it?" or say "wow, that's amazing". Something like that.
Re: 7 wonders of the modern world
May I understand that candidates can be only the buildings in front of that you can say "O, la, la... oh my God, it's huge!!!"?
What about this humble monastery, unique in the world?

Not only ACTUALLY been built. Even you like or not, EVERYTHING from the actual world inherits some from the past.
Re: 7 wonders of the modern world
If you truely go looking for the wonders created in the modern world ... I think you will find a lot of problems gathering their names.. instead you will find 7 most trageic events more easily. In the modern world, if humans have done something wonderous, its mass destruction. I am not saying that this was not there in the past ... I am just saying that it is more visible and prevalent today.
By the way, I voted 7 yersterday..let me recollect : Taj Mahal, Great Wall, Eiffel tower, Petronas, Pisa tower, Colosseum and I don't remember which one was my 7th vote .. but I think it must have been the Empire state building... effect of "Sleepless in Seattle"... :D CHeers
Re: 7 wonders of the modern world
The buildings I selected can be graded as the 7 'popular' wonders of the world simply because I am not aware of many of the other buildings listed.
ovidiucucu was right when he said that most often people mistake a 'wonder' with the size of the monument, rather than the uniqueness of the structrue. I believe that with advancement in technology and growing population it will become necessary (and easier) to build huge structures, and a time will come when buildings as huge as the WTC or Petronas will become a common sight...but the uniqueness of a man made structure will allways live on... ;)

I can add any other option to the poll, just ask for it. However, personally I don't see why Veronet Monastry could make it to the top 7 wonders of the world. For the paintings? I know they are unique. But I think there are greater achievements in building. The idea is that if I, who I am a Romanian only saw it at TV, I'm sure that most of the people of the world never heard about it. The building and monuments that I listed are rather world-wide known. And I didn't want to be accused of being biased when listing those buildings.

I don't see the Pantheon in Rome here. I think a building with a huge dome that was built nearly 2000 years ago and is still a functioning building today is an amazing thing. Its over 400 years older than Hagia Sophia.

I've seen the Pantheon in Rome. Vittorio Emanuele II and Rafael Sanzio are buried there. You know, this building has a relatively wide empty space in the rooftop. It's strange when it rains, I guess...
